New England Patriots Sponsor Boston, Providence LGBTQ Flag Football Leagues
BOSTON, MA & PROVIDENCE, RI (September 26, 2019) – The Boston FLAG (Friends, Lesbians and Gays) Flag Football League and Providence Gay Flag Football League (PVDGFFL) are proud to announce individual sponsorships from the reigning Super Bowl Champions, the New England Patriots. These premier flag football leagues for the LGBTQ community kicked off their fall seasons earlier this month with additional support from their National Football League hometown team.
“We’re happy to once again be partnering with the FLAG Flag Football league and are thrilled that there is now a Providence league as part of Patriots nation,” said Josh Kraft, president of the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation. “Both leagues represent the vision of LGBTQ inclusiveness and marriage equality that the Patriots embrace.”
The bulk of the sponsorship will be used to make the league more affordable to players who may not be able to participate otherwise. Additionally, funds will go towards the league’s participation in the 2019 Gay Bowl in New York City, keeping costs low in order to make the experience available to as many players as possible.
“It is truly an honor to be entering our 21st year of FLAG Flag Football with the unwavering support of the New England Patriots,” said FLAG Flag Football Boston Commissioner, Ken Westermann. “Through the funding of our travel team program for this year’s Gay Bowl in New York City, to expanding the overall reach and impact on the local community that we make playing the sport of football, we are excited for the Patriots to join us in our league’s mission of transforming lives through sport for the LGBTQ and ally community.
The recreational football clubs strive to build relationships and break down stereotypes between LGBTQ and allied teammates and foster an environment where LGBTQ persons can learn about and participate in a team sport – many for the first time in their lives. This fall, 24 teams and more than 350 players in Boston and 11 teams and 162 participants in Providence will compete weekly in their respective cities. Additionally, 8 travel teams between the two cities will attend tournaments nation-wide, including Gay Bowl XIX in New York City.

- You will have to create a quick profile (should only take seconds)
- You will need to add a head shot to your profile. (Must be less than 10MB)
- The registration fee for all players is STILL only $95.
- All NEW players are required to attend New Player Clinic Day on Saturday, September 7 (details to follow).
- Games will be scheduled every Saturday from September 14 through November 23 (note, we will not be playing Columbus Day Weekend and Halloween Weekend)

About the ScholarshipIn November 2017, FLAG Flag Football’s annual youth scholarship was renamed the Marc E. Lewis Youth Scholarship. Marc was notified with this news when he announced his retirement from our Board at the Fall 2017 season-end celebration. We cannot think of a more meaningful way to honor Marc and recognize his ten years of service on our Board.
The Marc E. Lewis Youth Scholarship is presented annually to a graduating high school student who has made school and/or community sports programs safer for, and more inclusive of, LGBTQ student-athletes, as either a role model or ally. In line with the mission of our organization, students of all athletic skill levels, achievement, and contributions are encouraged to apply. Marc first envisioned this scholarship five years ago, and, under his leadership, we have been proud to award this $5,000 scholarship ever since.
Marc, as an educator and advocate for LGBTQ+ youth, has brought this passion to FLAG Flag Football, and, as the longest serving Board member in our history, transformed our organization.
In addition to our scholarship, Marc has envisioned and led multiple other youth initiatives over the years. Our LGBTQ Youth Field Day, first organized by Marc in 2011 as the first-of-its-kind event, in which teens throughout the state were invited to join other LGBTQ high school students for an afternoon of games, food, music, and networking, has blossomed into a partnership with the Safe Schools Program for LGBTQ Students, an anti-bullying initiative of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth. We are so proud of this collaboration and annual tradition.
In June 2017, FLAG Flag Football, under Marc’s leadership, replicated this field day at Camp Lightbulb, a weeklong summer camp in Provincetown, Massachusetts for LGBTQ young people between ages 14 and 18. Marc encouraged us to go one step further and we presented our first annual “campership,” funding a young person’s camp experience. We provided a second campership the following summer.
We hope that this scholarship will forever honor a leader and friend who has dedicated his professional life to education and personal service to improving the lives of others. A public school social studies teacher for nearly 20 years, Marc led his local teacher’s union for a decade, and prior to that, was the president of GLSEN Boston, the founding chapter of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, an organization dedicated to ensuring safe and affirming schools for LGBTQ students.
This scholarship, we believe, best honors Marc’s passion, commitment, and service — to his students, our league, and community.
